Building an Estes Mosquito

After buying my husband an Estes Sabre kit for his birthday this past summer (see the other links from our rockets page for some pictures of launches.) He's having so much fun that I decided to build a kit too. I've seen a number of positive reviews of the Mosquito on the model rockets newsgroup, so I decided to make that my first kit ever. Neither the Mosquito nor the ½ A engines required were available at the local hobby shop, so we ordered several kits and some engines online.

So here's the unopened kit:

And the contents of the kit (except for the quarter, which I'm using to show how small the pieces are)...

...and other supplies I used to build it. (Please ignore the pen which seems to have migrated from work.)

First I cut out the fins and marked the body tube:

And glued on the fins,

followed by the launch lug and the nose cone.

You'll notice that there's no place for a streamer or a parachute. Recovery is by tumble - the rocket is light enough that it won't be damaged by falling. I understand that the biggest problem is finding it.

After using sanding sealer on the fins and sanding them smooth, I put on a coat of white paint,

followed by a coat of fluorescent orange.

Unfortunately, this didn't work out as well as I hoped. The orange paint didn't work well with the white, and crackled up. Orange paint crackled upSo I haven't put any finishing touches (I was considering stripes). I'll leave that for my next model, and just fly this one.
