Field Trip - Sedona, March 5-12, 2006

On March 5-March 12 I traveled to Sedona, AZ, to attend a 3-1/2 day Elderhostel Class on fundamentals of drawing and colored pencil. My plan was to stay two extra days so I could do some sight-seeing, including my first visit to the Grand Canyon. Unfortunately, nature intervened. First a "bug" got into my system and laid me low so that I missed two days of the class. Then the weather deteriorated rapidly into about two days' worth of snow in Northern Arizona. It snowed so much that roads to the Grand Canyon were closed. I substituted a rather unsatisfactory two hour tour of Sedona with a very hokey tour driver/guide. He never shut up the entire two hours! The next day I managed to get out of Phoenix but we hit bad storms in the Midwest before we made it to O'Hare.

Here's a picture of seven of the people in my class with the teacher, Janet Collins (second from right standing).

Because of travels, I attended only two of four classes in March. I also decided to go back to charcoal as I wouldn't be able to make much progress with pastel pencils in two class periods. Our model was John P. He was one of our models last year as well.

This is my "finished" piece:
