February 2006 Archives

Our model for February is a beautiful young woman of mixed race and mixed ethnicity. I've decided to post my week-by-week progress. I'm going to use mostly, if not only, pastel pencils. The first week I spent most of my time doing a charcoal sketch to get the proportions correctly. Richard helped me some. Then I started blocking in some of the values and color.

This term I am getting a ride to my portrait class in Evanston and so have joined the morning class. Supposedly the "serious" people go in the morning, but I find everyone as enjoyable as in the afternoon class.

The first model this term was Steve French. He's been our model before and presents a challenge. The pose was extremely difficult but someone else in the class wanted to work on "hands." I used only pastel pencils. My picture is the result of three weeks' work and isn't finished. I've also included a previous black & white charcoal I did of Steve for comparison.
