My first crochet project was a hat for my son:

The hat was free-form, worked without a pattern. I started with a spiral, worked in double crochet; the sides are a mix of double and single crochet. I used Lion Brand Kitchen Cotton yarn, varicolored yellow and dark blue.

I followed that up with a similar hat for the daughter of a friend of ours:

This also uses Kitchen Cotton. I added additional stitches in the brim so it would have a ruffle, and varied the stitches in the sides rather than change colors.

And moved on to crocheting a winter hat for my neice

This hat is from the "Children's Winter Warmer Set" from the Chase The Chill book from Leisure Arts.
